Wyoming Genealogy

Even though Wyoming was one of the last areas to become a state, you can still get documents back to to late 1800s (most starting around 1909 though). Restrictions are tough, which can make Wyoming genealogy a challenge.

Wyoming Vital Records

Recent vital records are held by the Department of Health's office of Vital Statistics. They have birth registrations going back 100 years from today, but both death and marriage records are only kept by this office for 50 years. During that time period, they are tightly restricted and will only be issued to the people who are listed on the record, or their parents. Death records may also be issued to siblings or spouses. Needless to say, that can make Wyoming genealogy difficult.

If you do happen to meet those requirements, you can get certified copies of any Wyoming vital record just by submitting a request form to their office in Cheyenne and paying a search fee. The forms can be picked up at their counter, or just downloaded from the Department of Health website. You need to provide the names, locations and dates for your desired records as well as your own contact information and photocopy of your ID.

With the forms, you have to pay the current fee to cover the cost of the search. Each record will cost $13 each, and can be paid by money order to "Vital Records Services". You can mail all your material to the office, or take it directly to their office in person (for while-you-wait) service.

Any records older than the privacy period listed above can be accessed by anyone, and they are kept at the Wyoming State Archives.

Wyoming State Archives

For older vital records and other material for Wyoming genealogy, the State Archives is very helpful. They are located in Cheyenne and the research room is open through the week during typical business hours.

Their collection of references include old photographs, personal manuscripts, maps, military records, newspaper archives, vital records that are public domain, business records, and many levels of government documents as well. Some databases can be searched online and they are currently digitizing map images and newspapers as well for better remote viewing.

Genealogy Groups

Joining a Wyoming genealogy group can be an excellent way to find new resources and get past roadblocks in your research. You can learn a lot from other genealogists who may be looking for the same people you are, and many groups have their own libraries or collections of hard-to-find documents.

The main group for the entire state is the Wyoming State Historical Society, which does cover many aspects of history besides just genealogy. They are still a good resource that you should not forget about.

Smaller groups for other parts of Wyoming, such as the Jackson Hole Historical Society or the Sheridan Genealogy Society can be another option to narrow your contacts down to a specific area.
